This consultation ended 2 April 2018.
Summary of outcome
We received almost 1900 responses (some representing the views of children and/or young people) via the online consultation and by post or email. In addition 274 individuals took part in workshops, focus groups and drop in events.
The responses to the consultation are being independently analysed.
While we aim to publish analysis of consultation responses within 12 weeks of the end of the consultation period, it may take a little longer in this case due to the number of responses received. The analysis will be published here in due course.
We want your views on the proposal to remove the defence of reasonable punishment.
It is against the law for a parent or carer to smack their child, except where this amounts to ‘reasonable punishment’ (section 58 Children Act 2004).
We are consulting on the development of a legislative proposal to remove this defence. This would not create a new criminal offence, but would remove a defence to the existing offence of common assault or battery.
