Summary of outcome
Following the consultation we have worked with stakeholders to develop a preferred approach for Wales. Our detailed policy in relation to future water management in Wales was set out in our Water Strategy for Wales published in May 2015. Our response to the consultation was published 15 January 2016 and we will now work with stakeholders in Wales to develop the legislation needed to deliver our objectives.

We are consulting jointly on proposals to reform the system used to manage water removal from rivers and ground water across Wales and England.
Consultation description
We want to ensure the sustainable management of our water in Wales. This includes considering if the water abstraction (removing water from rivers, etc.) management system in Wales needs to change. This consultation explores options for reforming the current system. We welcome your views on these.
The impacts of removing (abstracting) water directly from rivers or ground water can be wide-ranging. It can affect the environment including important nature conservation sites and access to rivers for leisure purposes. Water is vital to the economy it can generate power run industries and grow food. Access to clean safe and secure water supplies is fundamental to society. This is why water abstraction is a licensed activity regulated by the Natural Resources Wales.
Our aim is to ensure we have a sustainable and resilient water abstraction management system in Wales which meets the needs of our future generations.
