Nominated for Citizenship award

Hilary Johnston is the Founder and Trustee Chairperson of the not-for-profit charity Cwtch Baby Bank, based in Taffs Well.

Set up in 2016, Cwtch Baby Bank is the first of its kind in Wales and supports vulnerable families in the community, doing so by redistributing pre-loved baby items, essential equipment, clothing, toys and toiletries for newborn to 24 month old babies. Cwtch Baby Bank have no direct contact with the families they help, they instead provide these essential items through referrals from social care, health professionals and other relevant support agencies ensuring that the donations received go directly to the people who need them the most.

Hilary’s journey began when she became a foster parent for babies up to the age of 2 in the Merthyr area. Hilary retired from foster caring after 20 years, and was inspired to set up the baby bank after she realised there wasn’t a charity willing to receive her left over baby equipment. Hilary organises regular fundraising events, such as an annual ball, and reaches out to local shops and businesses to help raise money for the charity. Since its launch, the Cwtch Baby Bank has already helped over 750 families. Hilary is committed to helping vulnerable families with children in Wales.
