Nominated for International award

The Y Gwyll/ Hinterland Production Team is shortlisted for the way the drama is promoting Wales and the Welsh language to an international audience.

Set in and around Aberystwyth and the wider Ceredigion region, the drama produced by Fiction Factory for BBC Cymru Wales in partnership with S4C, takes its inspiration from crime dramas such as ITV’s Broadchurch and Nordic Noir drama ‘The Killing’ from Denmark. The 4-part series was originally broadcast in Welsh in October 2013, followed by an English version broadcast on both BBC Wales and BBC4 in early 2014. When it was shown on BBC Wales, it was the first time that a BBC television drama has contained both Welsh and English dialogue. Through media distributor All3media, the series has been a global success with the programme being shown in Germany, Australia, Iceland, Holland, Belgium, Finland, Norway and New Zealand. The series is also being shown on Netflix in the USA as well as on its feeds in Canada and Scandinavia. The economic benefits to the Aberystwyth area as a result the series being filmed there have been calculated at more than £1m. The series has also won a number of international awards such as the prestigious Cine Golden Eagle Award 2014, the Best Drama award at the Celtic Media Awards 2014 as well as 3 BAFTA Cymru awards in 2014. A new series of the popular crime drama will be on screen in late 2015.
