Welsh Government Apprentices

Why an apprenticeship?

As an apprentice you will earn while you train. It’s a great career choice whether you are leaving school or college, returning to work after starting a family or looking for a new career. There’s a wide range of jobs on offer.  A job at the Welsh Government is unlike any other in Wales.

At the Welsh Government you’ll be given support and guidance so you can develop your skills in the workplace. You will also need to set aside time to study for your apprenticeship. You’ll be a valued member of the team from day one.

What apprenticeships are available?

There are no apprenticeship schemes open for recruitment at this time, however we normally look to run three separate schemes:

  • Digital Data and Technology apprenticeships
  • Business and Administration apprenticeships
  • Finance apprenticeships

You will need to apply for each scheme you are interested in. This means you would need to apply for all three apprenticeship adverts if you’re interested in all three schemes. Please keep in mind, these are very different opportunities and the application form questions will therefore differ for each scheme.

When and how?

There are currently no live apprenticeship schemes. This page will be updated once a new scheme is posted. In the event of any queries, please contact apprenticeshipscheme@gov.wales.

Our approach to equality

Welsh Government wants to be the best employer in Wales. Our Workforce Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy 2021-26 sets out our commitment to increase diversity in our workforce, in particular by addressing the under-representation of disabled people and people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities at all levels of the organisation, and the underrepresentation of women in senior roles. We want to encourage people from a range of communities to apply to be an apprentice.

We welcome applications from everyone regardless of age, marriage and civil partnership (both same sex and opposite sex), whether you have an impairment or health condition, are neurodivergent or use BSL, sex, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, gender identity or gender expression.

We work hard to create a supportive and inclusive environment for all staff, in which to grow, and perform, to the best of their ability.

We are committed to being an anti-racist organisation and particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people, and disabled people who are under-represented in the Civil Service in Wales.

We have adopted the social model of disability, which recognises that barriers in society, attitudinal, institutional and communication barriers act to disable people who have impairments or health conditions, who are neurodivergent or who use British Sign Language. We are committed to removing barriers, through recruitment adjustments and work place adjustments, so that all staff, potential or new, can perform at their best. If you need to discuss adjustments for any part of the recruitment process, or wish to discuss how we could put work place adjustments in place if you are successful, please email apprenticeshipscheme@gov.wales  and a member of the team will contact you.

We guarantee to interview any disabled person who meets the minimum criteria for the scheme. By ‘minimum criteria’ we mean that you must provide us with evidence, at each stage of the assessment process before interview, which demonstrates you generally meet the job description requirements. We are committed to the employment and career development of disabled people.

This new Apprenticeship campaign aims to encourage people to apply from all different backgrounds ensuring that Welsh Government builds on being representative of the communities we serve. There are numerous policies and practices in place which support colleagues, and line managers, to ensure diversity and inclusion is key in what we do, and how we support staff. For this Apprenticeship Scheme we’ll be using name free recruitment as well as ensuring our interview panels are made up with a diverse range of colleagues.

There are a number of staff diversity networks which have healthy membership and allies’ schemes; these are forums where you can get advice and guidance, as well as enjoy network events and social activities.

These networks are:

  • Disability Awareness and Support
  • Minority Ethnic Staff Network
  • PRISM (LGBT+)
  • Women Together

In recent years we have been awarded Level 3 Leader Status for being a Disability Confident employer,  In the 2019-20 Stonewall Workplace Index we were awarded 8th place in the UK.  The Index supports Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender (LGBT+) employees. We have signed up to the Race at Work Charter and are included on the list of organisations that have been recognised as an inclusive employer for race. We have also been awarded Gold status by a:gender, the inclusive support network for staff in Government Departments and Agencies, covering all aspects of gender reassignment, gender identity, gender expression and Intersex.

We pride ourselves as being an employer of choice; an organisation in which people want to work and are proud to work. For this reason, we have put the principles of human rights, equality, fairness, dignity and respect at the heart of our values.

Diversity - We measure it because it matters

We are committed to being an equal opportunities employer. We wish to ensure that all applicants are treated fairly and appointed solely on their suitability for the post, irrespective of who they are or where they come from.

We are sensitive to the fact that some people would rather not complete diversity forms - maybe because they fear the information will be misused. However we assure you that all information provided is kept strictly confidential, used PURELY for statistical purposes and will not be used to influence recruitment decisions.

A copy of our diversity policy is available upon request.
